This article discusses the use of quality rating systems in child care to improve quality. Fourteen States are currently implementing quality rating plans. Overall, about 24 States are exploring or designing quality rating systems. The rating systems evaluate child care facilities on such criteria as low child-adult ratios, teacher credentials, curriculum, group size, and the safety and richness of the environment. Most States provide financial and training assistance to help facilities raise quality. Parents are urged to use the star ratings as a basis for questioning providers.
